Happy Autumn!

As the seasons change and fall settles in, our students’ lessons continue to grow with them. Please check with your children about what they are learning in classes and have them tell you all about it. This actually helps them retain more learning over time. Also, an easy way to help your child grow academically is to support our reading goal of 20 minutes each night. This could be you reading to them (at any age!) or them reading alone or with a sibling. Reading daily makes a big difference in long-term achievement.

The teachers at Miller’s Run are in their third year of professional learning around an educational philosophy called Universal Design for Learning. UDL, as it’s called, encourages us as teachers to get to know their students as individuals—their interests, their challenges, their hopes and dreams—in order to tailor their lessons to be accessible to all their students.

We saw many of you last night at open house. We hope to see everyone at parent conferences on October 18th, either in the afternoon or in the evening. You will be contacted by your child’s teacher to set up your conference.

We have been practicing safety drills at school this month, with a fire drill and a lock-down, intruder drill. The students and staff handled both drills perfectly. We will continue this year to consider different situations and develop a plan on how we can safely react. You will find a list of emergency response codes with this letter.

As we head into October, we have several field trips and learning opportunities planned.
